All Covenants, between God and His people, are Made and Authored by God
Some Covenants in the Bible are made by Men and are between Men, where God is Not involved.
Covenant between Abram and Abimelech (Man with Man)
Genesis 21:27, Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.
Covenants by God are Divine Covenants, made by oath, established, spoken, and sworn by God and are entered into and are between and with Him and His people.
Genesis 17:2, “I will establish My covenant between Me and you (Abraham), And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Deuteronomy 29:12–13, that you (nation of Israel) may enter into the covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath which the Lord your God is making with you today,
in order that He may establish you today as His people and that He may be your God, (Deut. Cov, Deut 29:1-30:20) just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Abrahamic Cov)
Covenants of God are Promises of God
Promises of God
Joshua 21:45, Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.
Galatians 3:18, For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise. (Compare Gen. 17:2)
Genesis 21:1, Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised.
Genesis 28:15, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Genesis 50:24, Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.”
Exodus 12:25, “When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite.
Deuteronomy 1:11, ‘May the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, just as He has promised you!
Deuteronomy 26:18, “The Lord has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments;
Covenants of God, come in two categories:
Covenants of God, between God and Man, come in two categories:
1. Covenants of God may have a Divine commitment, with No Human obligation (Unilateral Covenants).
2. Covenants of God may have a Divine commitment, with a Human obligation (Bilateral Covenants).
Unilateral Covenants
Unilateral Covenants (Un-Conditional Covenants) are made and authored by (God) and acted on by only one involved party (God), as in God’s “I Will” statements, (Gen 12:1-3) irrespective of what the second party does (Un-Conditional).
This applies to Most Covenants (like Noahic, Abrahamic, Deuteronomic, Davidic, and New Covenant
[Unilateral Covenants are NOT agreements between two parties, Only God has a say in them]
Bilateral Covenants
Bilateral Covenants (Conditional Covenants) are made and authored by (God) and acted on by the two involved parties;
(God) the first party, as in God’s “I Will” statements (Gen 12:1-3) and (Man) the second party, as in “we will” statements (Ex 19:8, 20:19, 24:3, 24:7)
If either party defaults > then the Covenant is no longer binding (Conditional).
This applies to Covenants (like Adamic (Edenic) and Mosaic Covenants)
Covenants of God, apply to certain Men and their Physical Descendants (Seed)
Genesis 9:9, “Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you (Noah), and with your descendants after you;
Genesis 15:18, On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:
Genesis 17:7, “I will establish My covenant between Me and you (Abraham) and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
Genesis 17:19, But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
Numbers 18:19, “All the offerings of the holy gifts, which the sons of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you (Aaron) and your sons and your daughters with you, as a perpetual allotment. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord to you and your descendants with you.”
Covenants of God, The Lord is the Covenantor and Certain Men are the Covenantee
The Lord, the covenantor, is not only concerned with the covenantee (like Noah), but with the covenantee’s future physical descendants (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Israel, Ps 105:6–11) Like Descendants of > (Abraham, Gen 12:7, 13:15, 17:17, Isaac, Gen 26:3-4, Jacob, Gen 28:4, 13-14, 35:12, Moses, Ex 32:13, 33:1, David, 2 Sam 7:12, Nation of Israel, Ps 105:10)
Physical Descendants (Seed) are person’s that come forth from one’s body (Heirs)
As Isaac came from Abraham’s body, “one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” (Gen 15:4)
Physical Descendants as seen in Genealogies of the OT and the NT. (Gen 5 + 11, 1 Chron 1-9, Matt 1, Luke 3)
Physical Descendants as seen in (Abraham, Gen 17:7, Isaac, Gen 26:3, Jacob, Gen 35:12, Moses, Ex 32:13, Sons of Israel, Ex 6:2-8, Deut 1:8, 4:37, 2 Chron 20:7, David, Jer 33:22, Jesus, Matt 1:1)
Covenants and the Promises belong to Israel
Romans 9:4–5, “who are Israelites, to whom (Israel) belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, whose (Israel’s) are the fathers, and from whom (Israel) is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
